The people of Bali are going through an extremely tough time due to the global outbreak of COVID-19 and the halt on international travel. With the vast majority of Balinese people relying directly or indirectly on the tourism industry for survival, and tourist numbers estimated to be down over 95% most people have lost their jobs or are on unpaid leave.
If you’ve been to Bali you will know how kind and welcoming the people are. While all of us have been affected by this global crisis, many of us are still fortunate enough to be in a position to help those less fortunate and would like to give support but don’t know where to start. Even if you can only spare a few dollars that will still make a difference for a family in need.
This fundraiser, ‘Supporting Bali through COVID-19‘ was set up to coordinate resources to support the people of the KlungKung regency which is not a touristy area but where a lot of families in the villages rely on one person who goes to work in a tourism town. Now that there is no tourism everyone is back in their village and their families are struggling to survive. As most people in Bali live paycheck to paycheck they now do not have a way to meet their basic day to day needs such as food and hygiene items.
The funds raised will be used to buy Food & Hygiene Packs that include staple foods (rice, noodles, eggs, vegetables, oil), protective masks, hand/dish soap & disinfectant to support those who are struggling due to the impacts of COVID-19. We will be keeping a record of all goods purchased and where and how they are used in this spreadsheet. Our initial goal is to get supplies for 500 families, starting with the most vulnerable – helping the elderly and poor children first.
The collection and distribution of the funds and goods is being managed on the ground in Bali by Agung Juliarta and his team at Puri Asia. His friends, James Ambler and Hayley Coeland, are providing admin support from Australia and New Zealand. This fund raising project started with Agung (founder of Puri Asia, a villa rental agency) having to send his staff home to their villages on unpaid leave because there is simply no work and, being a small agency he has no way to pay them now that tourism in Bali has ground to a halt. Many of his staff are from the KlungKung region, as is Agung. Because of his understanding of the struggles of the people in his own village of Paksebali Agung wants to utilise his resources and team to coordinate support to help people to get by with no income during these unprecedented times.

How the funds will be distributed
Our goal is to deliver food packs to 500 families. Agung and his team will purchase the supplies and assemble the packs. Volunteers from the volunteer organisation Yayasan Relawan Bali will carry out contactless pick up and deliver the packs within the KlungKung regency. Only individuals from the religion will make the deliveries to avoid spreading COVID-19 from other areas. Yayasan Relawan Bali is a well established volunteer organisation with a good understanding of who is in need in the villages of KlungKung and will coordinate with the local organisation, Satgas Covid-19, which was set up to manage the Covid-19 situation.
